Who are they?

I thought readers may be interested to know a bit more about the images in our blog header.  This is what we know so far, please feel free to comment and add missing information if you can?  All original images were cropped for the header, click on Flickr Photos link in right hand column to view or save images.

Original Library late 1950sOriginal Library

Every pupil has the privilege of using the Library and every pupil benefits from it.  Our studies are extremely varied, but our bookshelves provide information on all these and upon our hobbies as well.” (Elizabeth Gibb, 3B, Library Assistant – Year Book 1959)

Elizabeth went on to say new resources were displayed before shelving and wrote of the special magazine section including Walkabout, Books & Bookmen, Canon and The Courier.  Each student was permitted to borrow one book per week. The library boasted a collection of around 3,000 resources which is small by today’s standards (23,799 plus hundreds of catalogued websites).  Any memories of library days at Moorefield? – we are still accepting overdues!!  Feel free to comment.

Home Science Block late 1950sHome Science Block

We had a lovely letter from Lynne Mathew (Elsworth) Class of 1961 explaining her surprise to find her photo on the header of the 50th Anniversary Celebration Special Edition Moorefield Matters Newsletter.  She was contacted by a school friend who passed the newsletter on to her.  Lynne writes “I do remember having photographs taken for the magazine ‘Progress in Education’ when I was in 1st Form in 1957”.  Great memory Lynne!  Can anyone identify the other two students on this image in the header?  Feel free to comment.

 Royal Visit 1970Royal Visit

During the Captain Cook Bi-Centenary Celebrations, James Cook Boys High and Moorefield Girls High were visited by the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne.  The Captains of all secondary schools in NSW came to meet the Royal Family on the oval on Wednesday 29 April 1970 watched by the pupils and staff of both schools, and a huge crowd outside the fences.

The visiting captains had arrived the previous day and been billeted with pupils of James Cook and Moorefield.  After a picnic lunch arranged by the Moorefield Ladies’ Auxilliary, the visitors and their hosts went on a bus trip, before returning home for dinner.  The Mayor of Rockdale gave a ball in the Rockdale Town Hall that evening. Any personal memories of the day?  Feel free to comment.

Captain and Vice Captain 1960Captain and Vice Captain 1960

Diana Pearson (Captain) and Barbara Amidy (Vice Captain).  The following is an excerpt of the Captain’s Message in the 1960 Year Book:  “I should like to tell you how proud and honoured Barbara and I feel to have been Vice Captain and Captain of Moorefield during 1960.  You will find that when you reach 5th year you begin to wonder what lies ahead for you … yet you hesitate to leave the life you enjoy at school … we regret that we must leave this school while we ourselves are still young and while Moorefield is young … May you find as much happiness as we have done and may you help Moorefield to win greater honours in the future.”  Any memories of 1960? Feel free to comment.

  1. I remember the Queens visit in 1970. I was in 4th form and it was the biggest thing. The whole school turned upside down for it and it was really remarkable at the time.

  2. I remember the Queens visit, also,in 1970.We were all so excited about her coming.I got to see her up real close and remember thinking what a lovely lady she looked.I was in 2nd or 3rd form.
I would love to catch up with old friends especially good friend Paula McGranger,we went to Ramsgate Primary together also.
    Kind regards,
    Judy Winterflood.

  3. Judy, there were two articles in the local newspaper (Leader) 18/02/2010 commemorating that visit. I’ll try to send them to your email address. Regards, Rene

  4. what a surprise to see the pictures of Barbara and Diane I attended Moorefield 1959 to 1961 I won a writing competion in 1960 and the Headmistess was Dot Curley and one of my teachers was Carol Tarlington we had a maths teacher that through chalk if you were not paying attention, I cant remember her name

  5. Hi I was in first form in 1970 and remember the Royal Visit very clearly. I spoke at length with the Duke of Edinburgh, in a group of fellow students. I think I still have the medallion we were issued with.

  6. The Queens visit was a highlight for us all. The home ec 4th form class were given the honour of making caramel tarts ( the Queens favs apparently) and other morning tea nibbles. The cooking teacher, a tough but thorough teacher, was so proud of our efforts. Charlie and Anne were really down to earth and we all saw another side to royal family … a positive memory for me, Annette Irish (nee Dreis)
